Devils Tower Sunset

Devils Tower National Monument, 2008

Clouds rush by as the Sun sets on Devils Tower. The Lakota called the tower Mato Tipila, which means “Bear Tower”. American Indian folklore tells of some Sioux girls who were picking flowers when they were chased by bears. The Great Spirit raised the ground beneath the girls to create the tower. The bears tried to climb the tower, but were unable, leaving their scratch marks on the sides.
